The anti-coagulant drug Xarelto® has been implicated in thousands of instances of uncontrollable internal bleeding, and hundreds of deaths. Unlike some other blood thinners, there is no cure—no antidote for the bleeding. Hemorrhaging patients must be hospitalized and simply hope the drug wears off soon enough.
Xarelto® Has Been Linked to Uncontrollable Internal Hemorrhaging
Bayer Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson, the pharmaceutical companies who developed and marketed the prescription drug, Xarelto (Rivaroxaban), have been blamed for failing to warn patients of a very serious and adverse side effect of this drug: uncontrollable bleeding.
Since the product was approved by the FDA in July 2011, doctors have been reporting thousands of adverse events, including internal bleeding, hospitalization, disability and death.
According to Adverse Events, the company who compiles the physician data obtained through the FDA Adverse Events Reporting System (FAERS), Xarelto has been considered the “primary suspect” in over 1,821 reports filed in FAERS as of August 27, 2012. These adverse events include gastrointestinal hemorrhage, brain hemorrhage, thrombosis, hematoma, edema peripheral and dyspnea and hemoglobin decrease. Hospitalization was reported in 891 of these events; 183 patients died from the medication.
Xarelto Is Prescribed As An Anti-Coagulant
Xarelto has been prescribed by doctors for three main reasons: (1) to reduce the risk of blood clots and strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation; (2) to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism; and to reduce the risk of clotting in patients who had hip or knee replacement surgery.
Xarelto is a blood thinner that prevents the clotting of blood. Blood clotting is essential to stop bleeding from a wound, but some people have conditions where they bleed even when they’re not injured. For instance, patients with atrial fibrillation are prescribed Xeralto to prevent the blood from pooling in the heart. This aids in preventing blood clots from travelling to the brain and causing the patient to have a stroke. Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) and pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs) can possibly lead to death if untreated.
To date there is no antidote to stop the uncontrollable bleeding caused by Xeralto. Instead, patients have to wait until the effects of the drug have subsided. This waiting game can lead to hospitalization, disability and even death.
Xarelto is licensed from Bayer Healthcare AG and is marketed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a Johnson & Johnson company. None of these companies have warned consumers about the uncontrollable bleeding that may occur from taking Xeralto. In fact, the FDA has asked the pharmaceutical companies to conduct further studies in order to test Xeralto’s safety. Those studies have yet to be completed.

FDA Calls Out Dangerous Blood Thinners Failure to Warn
Anticoagulants such as Xarelto have been pinpointed by the Food and Drug Administration as potentially adverse drugs in general. Their data includes almost 22,000 serious injuries and more than 3,000 fatalities from anticoagulants in 2016 alone. The Center for Disease Control has also released reports on blood thinners, stating that they have resulted in more ER visits than any other sort of therapeutic drug. This includes antibiotics and opioids.
Companies connected to Xarelto have been alleged to provide ineffective and insufficient warnings as to the side effects of the drug. Warnings about the many side effects of Xarelto were allegedly not included on the drug’s packaging. Xarelto also has a competitor in the marketplace, Warfarin, with reversible side effects. If these claims can be proven, Xarelto may be required to pay millions of dollars in restitution to people who have suffered any medical injury from taking the drug.
The FDA felt compelled to call for five updates to the warning label on Xarelto packaging from the years 2013 to 2016. This came after a clinical trial partially funded by Johnson & Johnson was found to be tainted in many different ways. Xarelto only enjoyed two years on the marketplace without controversy, as it was first approved in 2011.
There have been victories in lawsuits against Xarelto. Recently, Johnson & Johnson and Bayer have both been ordered to pay $28 million to a couple in Indiana who were harmed by Xarelto. Regardless of the size of the company, justice can be served if you have the right team by your side.
The companies that are associated with Xarelto consider it a huge part of their revenues, meaning they will protect it at all costs. Xarelto racked up $2 billion in sales in 2016 alone. In a little over half of a year in 2017, it had earned an additional $1.8 billion for its benefactors. This is despite the health risks that were noted by government agencies.
What Does This Mean For You?
Despite their losses, the companies that back Xarelto continue to back it. You will need the same level of legal expertise and leverage in your corner if you expect your voice to be heard. Otherwise, you can expect those companies to send their teams of attorneys to your case in an attempt to intimidate you or run you out of resources to fight in court. Even if you are in the right, the administration, organization and presentation of your case takes time and money. A class action lawsuit is the way for individuals to combine forces against companies like this without sacrificing their daily lives
